Msgr. Patrick J. Conners Council 4997
Reno, Nevada

In June of 2003, Rev. Vince Fallon was appointed Sacramental Minister of the parish; and Sister Anita Minihane, RSM, had previously been appointed Parish Life Administrator. Both of these individuals desired that the Knights become active in the parish. To meet this end, many meetings were held over the next several months. The meetings included four council members and state deputies. From these four members a Grand Knight Financial Secretary and Treasurer were secured.

In October the council issued its Mission Statement, which has been published to the Parish community. Our Mission Statement is:

The Mission of Council 4997 Msgr. Patrick J. Conners, Knights of Columbus is to embrace the principles of Father Michael J. McGiveny, founder of the Knights of Columbus. The Goal of our Council, under the direction of our Chaplain, Rev. Vincent Fallon, is to exemplify Charity Unity, Fraternity and Patriotism, provide service to our parish community and school, affirm the "right to life" and lead by example as faithful catholic members of our community.

The Council held its first meeting in our own council chamber in November of 2003. From this first meeting events were planned. We held an "after mass" pancake breakfast in November and again in December; both of these events brought new members. We now have scheduled a monthly pancake breakfast on the third Sunday of the month.

In November a seminarian, Elberto Melendez, was ordained a Deacon. At the request of Sister Anita, the Council provided an after ordination reception for over 400 attendees. This was accomplished with only 10 members of the council.

In January, the council organized a Super Bowl party for the parish and hopes to continue this as an annual event. The council has continued to recruit new members; and as of April 1, 2004, has grown by 22 new members since its reactivation in October 2003.

ACTIVITIES OF THE COUNCIL

  • Since October the Council has held 5 pancake breakfasts. One called "Pancakes with Santa" provided pictures of the parish children with Santa, with a prayer written by our Chaplain and new Knight, Father Vince Fallon, printed on the picture card.
  • Held a reception for Deacon Elberto Melendez, whose Ordination to the priesthood was on May 26, 2004, at which over 400 people attended.
  • Held a "Super Bowl Party" at the parish center in January of 2004.
  • Held a Community Dinner on May 1, 2004.

GOALS FOR 2005-2006

  • Hold membership "storms" to double the membership of the council
  • Expand our monthly meeting to twice a month
  • Hold one event for the parish each month
  • Fill the Activities Chairman's positions of Church, Community, Youth and Family in order to participate more fully as Knights of Columbus
  • Create the Ladies Auxiliary

In order to meet these goals, our council has taken an active stance in recruitment of new members. Of the 22 new members in the council, half have been recruited by a member with less than six months as Knights of Columbus. Half of the new members of the council have met the Shining Armor standards and will be receiving pins.
